Samsung: the future of the NX system
Although the Samsung NX11, announced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011, showed some progression in the NX-series' release schedule, it would appear that there's plenty more to come in the very near future.
What Digital Camera was lucky enough to visit Samsung HQ in Seoul, South Korea, and even got an insight into the factory production line in Busan, to the southern side of the country. As well as proving what an impressive and staggering job it is to make any one camera or lens from start to finish, scratching at the surface revealed that there's plenty more we can anticipate from the NX range in the fairly immediate future.
Samsung NX lenses roadmap
With the entire range of NX lenses now set to be i-Function capable, the announcement of a ‘Movie Pro' 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS, 16mm f/2.8, 60mm f/2.8 OIS Macro, ‘Portrait' 85mm f/1.4 and ‘Movie Home' 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 OIS all due for release inside 2011 is a firm and ongoing commitment to the NX series. In an interview with Jeong Wook Kim, Vice President of Samsung Digital Imaging, we found out details of a proposed lens factory move - a move that will provide yet more capable new premises to enhance the company's capability to make larger diameter lenses, up to 50mm. In addition output will be increased, and seeing as 2010 saw the production of some 18-million lenses, that certainly shows Samsung's up-and-coming rule of the optical world. It can also only suggest one other thing: that faster, brighter apertures and longer, more professional telephoto lenses are likely to be around the corner, the kind of lenses that aren't (as yet) available for any other Compact System Camera and could see future NX releases firmly set apart from the competition.

Although the big bosses confirmed a commitment to making five new lenses a year - a feat that they say no other Compact System Camera manufacturer is capable of - there was no specific comment as to what these lenses would be from 2012 and beyond. However, in discussion with the R&D team, it came to light that a prototype 700mm lens had already been made for the NX-mount, promptly followed by a very impressive close-up image of a full moon as shot using that very lens. And if such optical prowess is already a possibility for the system, though not yet commercially feasible, then the future of NX lens releases should be very strong, even professional-grade.
Samsung NX: A new beginning
Mr Kim disclosed that the move away from the GX-series DSLR system and, indeed, from the partnership with Pentax, was a decision to ‘think about how to focus on the camera business,' in order to put the company one step ahead of its rivals. Revealing a frank commitment to the NX-series, Mr Kim stated that, ‘we think the timing is right to create this new (NX) camera system, and if we lost out on more time then we'd be the latecomer in the market again and then we would repeat the same failure (GX DSLR).' However he was quick to assert an ongoing and good relationship with Pentax, and didn't rule out the possibility of future collaboration.
Come 2015, according to both Samsung and other analysts, the Compact System Camera market is set to overtake DSLR sales by volume, so a focus on this area of the business certainly seems like a shrewd move. Confident of the NX system's larger-than-Micro-Four-Thirds APS-C sized sensor, the company's target is the be the number one camera seller in five years' time.
Enquiring as to whether other sub-categories such as Sony's latest ‘SLT' (Single Lens Translucent) technology would be considered for production in the future, Mr Kim saw a clean-cut division between DSLR and Compact System Camera, with SLT firmly rooted in the former category: ‘Now the market is shifting to Compact System Camera - there will be two segments for interchangeable lens cameras (DSLR and CSC). Although professionals may continue to use DSLR, the SLT category will only attract a small portion of new DSLR users, not Compact System users that want the high quality.'
Samsung NX and the importance of video
And it's not just stills that were the hot topic of discussion. When developing the NX system, video functionality was certainly of key importance, and Mr Kim is keen to point out that development saw a lot of thought about different segmentation, including the possibility of a camcorder-like NX release: ‘Video recording is getting more important and more popular. We know that trend and Samsung is already very strong in video products, so we've always worked together with those other (Samsung) departments. When we first developed the NX system we put an ‘NX-movie' release on the roadmap. This will focus on the video function, and how to create video more conveniently; how to meet the demand for better quality video recording.'
As the NX series progresses, so too will its video-capability. Enquiring about the future of high definition, the team revealed that Super High Definition 4K2K is something being considered for the company's stills cameras as soon as 2013, and that ‘every option is being considered and worked on,' though without any definitive solution as to what may see the light of day and when.
The future of Samsung NX
Although details aren't one hundred percent concrete as to exact product releases, all paths point to the development of Samsung's NX series into a more rounded, complete and, we suspect, professional solution. Although there are only three UK camera bodies - the NX10, NX11 and NX100 - in production at present, the lens map and other information would suggest there will be yet more bodies in the future: to encompass the full range of quality, style, video and pro-grade capture. All we can do for now is watch this space, but from what we've seen Samsung is certainly putting its all into the digital imaging business and it looks like it'll pay off...2011년 1월 13일 목요일

Las Vegas- Samsung’s newest compact, the 14.2MP SH100, is essentially the brainchild of a company that has combined years of knowledge in the cellphone market, with its experience as a digital camera company. The result? A (nearly) fully social media-integrated “smart-camera.”
Bringing whole new meaning to the idea of instantaneous photo and video-sharing, the SH100 offers seamless Wi-Fi integration for PC users—thanks to built-in 802.11n wireless—as well smartphone integration for certain Android phone-users.
Do you have a Samsung Galaxy-S smartphone? If so, you will be happy to know that you can use your device as a remote to view what the SH100 sees, in real time. This means the ability to frame, shoot and GPS-tag an image. Unfortunately this nifty feature works only for the Galaxy-S. Sorry iPhone/Blackberry/other Android phone-users!
While the SH100’s smartphone compatibility is limited, its ability to sync with any PC is not. Utilizing either an available wireless Internet connections or a Boingo Wi-Fi hotspot (the SH100 comes with a Boingo subscription), users can back-up their images or videos, post them to social networking sites or email them to an individual address, all with the push of a few buttons.
A fan of Facebook? How about Picasa, Photo Bucket or Youtube? The SH100 makes directly transmitting photos and videos to these sites for sharing a breeze. Unfortunately, it does not appear that the SH100 is fully compatible with Flickr or Twitter. However the SH100 does allow users to send HD videos directly to their home DLNA-equipped HDTV, wirelessly, for real-time viewing.
Outside of the SH100’s love for sharing, it is essentially your average compact camera. It features a 14.2MP CCD sensor, 5x zoom (26-130mm 35mm equivalent), a 3” touchscreen, various automatic settings, HD video recording capabilities (specs not specified) and digital-only image stabilization.
Ultimately, despite its obvious compatibility drawbacks, the SH100 definitely represents a step forward in the compact camera field. With Wi-Fi available in many public locations, the demand for cameras that can painlessly share photos and videos for viewing by friends and family on social networking sites is growing. Unfortunately, until the further integration with other smartphones and devices occurs, it seems the SH100’s target audience will be somewhat limited.

What about the NX100 in 2010?
As a follow-up to the NX10, the NX100 was launched in September, becoming Samsung’s second mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. With its unique design of a leaf, morning dew, and i-Function lens, the NX100 created buzz in the second half of 2010, gaining as much popularity as the NX10. The product appealed particularly strong to those who value style. The lens offers unique functions that camera manias would only have dreamt of! Its biggest strength is the ability to adjust the features without taking your eyes off the view finder; you can capture every moment of the subject. The lens was also well-received by users of the NX10 as a simple firmware is enough to have it compatible with the NX100.
Continuing on my last posting NX10’s Hot Issues, let’s take a look back at the year for the NX100.

The NX10 was first unveiled in Hong Kong in September. With no official information on the NX100 until the unveiling ceremony, users as well as the press showed keen interest.
The NX10 in the hands of ‘OK Go,’ a world-famous rock band. The NX100 is at the center of producing the music video for their latest song ‘Last Leaf.’ From the first meeting to the music video production, collaboration of OK Go with NX100 was recorded in video.
Commemorating OK Go’s music video where thousands of toasts appear, Samsungimaging’s global campaign site (www.cre8yourworld.com) held an exciting event where you can upload a picture of yourself and make it into a toast!
The next line-up to the new concept, i-Function lens was also revealed. The new lens for 2011 includes a movie pro 18-200mm lens, 16mm wide pancake lens, and the macro 60mm lens that many are waiting for.
One of the biggest benefits of the NX100 is its design. At the PIN UP Design Awards, the NX100 received the bronze award for Electronic Devices for its ergonomic design.

The NX100 once again received the spotlight when it collaborated with the musicians OK Go. If you like music, surely you would know ‘OK Go,’ a YouTube indie band. Also, the dark hand behind the glass in contrast with the three colors helps the picture to maintain balance. The NX100 performs excellently even in a very dark environment. This is a picture of a bridge at night with lights on. A low ISO is used to capture as much of the little light as possible for a warm and beautiful picture. You’ll need equipments such as a tripod and a long nose, but with the NX100, you can easily become a professional even in dark settings!

The NX10′s Hot Issues of 2010!
Goodbye 2010!
What happened at Samsungimaging this year? If I were to choose the most popular Samsung camera launched this year, it will definitely be the NX10. The NX10 was Samsung’s first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, whose compact body, high resolution, and rapid AF sensor fulfilled the needs of its users.
Let’s take a look back from this year for Samsung’s NX10 through the SNS channel (Samsungimaging blog, YouTube, and Flickr).

With the start of the New Year, NX10 unveiled its presence in January 2010. Although the NX10 didn’t have a mirror or pentaprism function, the APS-C sensor delivered on both portability and performance.
Commemorating 10,000 followers on Samsungimaging’s Twitter channel, an event was held under the NX10’s leading slogan, ‘Why Capture? Create!’. The first place winner was awarded the NX10. There was a rush of applicants, but the photo of a cute little girl reading a newspaper with the slogan won the competition.
In April, WCIC was held where photos taken with the NX10 competed. With students from six countries around the world, voting was conducted on-line. The top ten participants were invited to hold exhibitions in Korea and to attend the awards ceremony.
So, is there anything the NX10 can’t capture? Samsungimaging organized ‘The World through Samsung NX10’ campaign with photographers from National Geographic. Two photographers traveled from Barcelona, Spain to Chengdu, China with the NX10 in their hands to portray the unique landscapes of the two countries. The campaign was instrumental in demonstrating that mirrorless cameras can create works just as nice as those with DSLR; the showcase at Photokina received much spotlight.

Samsung NX10 has received “Trefa” award (trefa means “hit” or “shot”) for quality of pictures, over-average lenses and good cost-value comparison
Experts were no exception when it came to complimenting the NX10. The NX10 won various awards this year including the Tefra Awards, DIMA 2010 Innovative Digital Product Awards, and PFV Fair.

Here are a few NX10 videos that created much buzz on the YouTube channel. As much spotlight that it received, a wide variety of NX10 viral videos were produced.
In this video, stop motion technique is used to illustrate the NX10 in a familiar way. The video seems to deliver the message that the camera is light in weight and can be used in an environment with a wide variety of fun. You do not need to be a professional to enjoy high quality photo!)

As much buzz as the camera created, ‘Video Making Story’ was also highly popular. Some 1,429 slices were cut to make the paper camera and the smallest details such as the shape and hot key were reproduced to accurately represent the camera. Check out the film making process on the YouTube channel.
The inside of the NX10 is represented in flipbook format for easier understanding. The whole book was flipped using hands in 30 seconds. The pentaprism and mirror have been removed, reducing the volume of the body and weight. Being much lighter than the DSLR, the camera is much more portable. This portrait was the most viewed in the Samsungzone Flickr Photostream. The photo of young kids was taken by Yonghyun Chi, an NX10 imageloger, on his tour of India. The warm color and the facial expression of the models are impressive.

It was taken on a quiet street in the dead of the night from the second floor of a building. The street is dark but the bright lighting from a store at the center of the photo makes it appear as if a pinhole effect was used.
A great work in low illumination received high scores with many registering it as ‘My Favorite.’

Daily objects that you see everywhere viewed from a different angle sometimes creates totally different yet marvelous subjects. The two eggs in the red bowl look like the face of a person. Daniel Kulinski, a NX10 imageloger and photographer is famous for looking at mundane objects from a fresh angle. Try to look at your familiar surrounding with fresh eyes – you will get great pictures!!
Last but not least is Ben Heine, who always entertains us with creative ideas. Already an on-line star, he has joined hands with the NX10 this time.

Rainy Paris
Samsung Electronics has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.
The Paris I know is the most beautiful when it rains. I like its stuffy metro, the parisians wearing in black, and all the historical bridges standing above la Seine full of rain.
I passed two years near Paris while finishing my master degree, so saw many other shiny days in Paris. It is also true that Paris shows off its particular charms under the blue sky. One of these charms is that we can always look over the Eiffel tower everywhere near the bridges.
However, my sweetest Paris is obviously with the rain. It is even romantic when Paris wears autumnal tints on its wet paths. This time, I had the chance to visit rainy Paris with falling leaves. I was there with my lover who just came back in France from the other side of the world. So I taked only the pancake lens for a long promenade with her.
We got off at St. Michelle by metro, then walked along la Seine from the Notredame until the canal of St. Martin, and returned back to the central Paris where we saw the museum Louvre in the night.
After a day of visit in Paris, we headed for Montparnasse to take a train. The lovely weekend wasn’t yet finished. We were a little bit exhausted because of wet socks and shoose, but the mind were full of love and expectations. We enjoyed the last Paris waiting the train at the station where people and birds were taking a rest keeping themselves away from the rain. A new life with her in my hometown was awaiting for me.

Winter Examination Session – cold, cold time!
As usual, during january my life became huge, messy circous. I’ve slept 2 – 3 hours per natural day, from coffe to coffe, from text to text, at least – from exam to exam.
But when you’ll be living like that over couple weeks, it makes your day longer of night half. Sometimes I think that I could be a vampire :) Night is a time of special imagination attitude too. Every of my writing master piece was making at night. Although I’ve been preapering to exams this days, I’ ve also formed my great bachelor work.
Now, I’m analysing the blogging phenomenon, and its democratic features, which we all create at this moment wheather we are author or reciver of this blog.

[Youtube] The winner of our event!
Wrapping-up 2009, we would also like to announce the winners of our last event, which took place on our YouTube channel ‘Samsungimaging’. From the 11th to the 27th December, users were able to submit their ticket for this raffle,
