The 14.6 effective megapixel Samsung NX11 upgrades the original NX10 (read our review here), with some refining design tweaks and additional lens compatibility, a 20mm ‘pancake’ plus 20-50mm zoom,launched alongside it. But although it is a compact system camera (or CSC) like its predecessor it still takes its style cues from a conventional bridge camera or digital SLR, rather than a pocket compact.

THERE is little doubt of the impact that affordable, high-quality digital SLRs have had in recent years, so you would be forgiven in thinking that its reign at the top of the photographic tree is unlikely to be threatened any time soon. However, in the last year or two, a new breed of camera has begun to emerge on the scene, looking to steal large chunks of the market currently dominated by DSLRs. Hybrids, as they're commonly known, share plenty of similarities with DSLRs, most notably boasting a lens mount that allows lenses to be swapped in exactly the same way as a DSLR. The biggest difference is the lack of a reflex mirror, which offers the benefits of a more compact and lighter camera body, but means there is no optical viewfinder. Panasonic and Olympus have been leading the hybrid charge with their Micro Four-Thirds cameras and are now joined by Samsung with its NX10. In this month's main camera test, we chiefly look at the Samsung NX10 but use it alongside the similarly-priced Nikon D3000, a DSLR we tested in our November 2009 issue. Is the Samsung NX10 the shape of things to come, or has hybrid cameras some way to go before it can offer a real alternative to the DSLR? Let's see what answers this test can give.

Samsung to expand its high-end camera range, engaging more photo specialists

SYDNEY, NSW: Samsung will realign its digital imaging focus in 2011, with the brand moving from domination of the low end of the category up to competing in the premium end, alongside key rivals Sony and Canon.
Lambro Skropidis, head of marketing at the Korean giant’s Australian office, explained how a delayed entry into the digital imaging categories resulted in Samsung becoming a volume player at the low end – a segment he said Samsung now is dominating. With Samsung’s objective to becoming the value leader in this category, a position currently held by Canon, Skropidis has outlined a strategy that encompasses new products, more innovation and a broadening of Samsung’s channel strategy.
We’ve continued to be in innovative categories like the hybrid area and the mirrorless area and we’re going to continue to play in that segment,” Skropidis said. “We’re going to continue to provide higher and higher ASP (average sales price) products. We’re doing very well in that market from a unit perspective: from what I can see, we completely dominate the low end of the pricing segments.
“The challenge for us is to become the overall value leader in the category — we’re having a really good run from a volume perspective, the last two periods in GfK we were the unit leader in the category, but from our perspective, trading below $250 is not really what it’s all about for us, so we’re going to continue to bring better and better innovations in higher price points.”
Skropidis said there would be more high end products in Samsung’s NX range released soon, with Current.com.au understanding that the week of 11 April 2011 has been pencilled in for a high-concept launch. In addition to hybrid and mirrorless models, there will be an expansion of Samsung 2View range and more interchangeable lens options for consumers.

Tortelloni with mushroom filling
Samsung Electronics has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.
For my final blog post I decided to cook something again. The recipe I’ll be making is tortelloni with mushroom filling and a simple butter sauce with salvia and lemon. A typical Italian dish!

Ingredients for 2 people:
250 g flour (special flour for pasta labeled “00″ or “doppio zero”)
2 1⁄2 eggs
125 g french mushrooms (the round white ones)
100 grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
1/2 clove of garlic
1 shallot
butter
2 leafs of salvia
a hint of lemon
First, we’ll make the filling for the tortelloni. Cut up the shallot and garlic and squeeze the garlic pieces so the juice comes out. Melt some butter in a pan and add the shallot and garlic. Let them fry on a low heat until they get slightly brownish.

In the meantime, we can cut up the mushrooms. Just cut them up in four big pieces and then add them to the pan.

Add pepper, no salt. You can add quite a lot of pepper, make it nice and spicy. The filling will give the tortelloni most of its flavour.

Smells good! But of course we can’t use it in this shape for our filling. It’s time to get the blender out and cut up it until it’s a nice soft paste.

Since we want a much dryer filling, we’ll have to add one more ingredient: Parmigiano-Reggiano. I love this cheese. Mix all of the cheese with the mushroom filling in a bowl or pot and you’ll notice how it gets dry and salty, just perfect!

Put the filling in the fridge, it’ll thicken up a bit more in there and in the meantime we can start to make our pasta dough.

Put all of the flour on a kitchen worksurface and make a small pile with a hole in the center. Somewhat like a volcano. In the center, add the eggs. With a fork we can now beat the eggs gently, until they are mixed.

After that, gently start mixing the flour with the eggs, step by step, using your hands. The result is a nice soft pasta dough!

Get your rolling pin and start rolling the dough until it’s only a few millimeters in thickness. It’s quite tricky, you might want to look for some video tutorials to see how it’s done. It was my first time also and dividing my ball of dough in half wasn’t such a good idea afterwards…

Now cut up the sheet of dough into squares of about 5 x 5 centimeters. Get the filling out of the fridge and put small amounts of it on the squares of dough.

Shaping the tortelloni is somewhat difficult. You basically fold the squares diagonally to a triangle, then fold the two tips on the long side and connect them together while wrapping them around a finger. It’s impossible to explain in words, so again, it’s a good idea to check for videos online.
If the dough is a bit too dry because you used too much flour, you could use a tiny bit of beaten egg to use as a “glue”.

All ready to be cooked!

For the sauce, we’re making a very simple traditional butter, salvia and lemon juice mix. Melt some butter, add a hint of lemon and chop up some leafs of salvia and add them. Boil some water and add the fresh tortelloni.

When the tortelloni start floating in the boiling water, they’re ready. Drain them and put them on a plate. Add the warm butter mix and finish it off with some leafs of salvia. Buon appetito!

The Color of Snow

It snowed hard. All the village is buried in a snowdrift. A deathlike silence has been settled down. I didn’t hesitate to go out with my camera. I felt an agreeable weather on the chicks. The sky was as bright as in the springtime owing to the color of snow. Lovely tall trees and gray roofs are all covered with dazzling white. I stepped on the cushiony ground. The snow was barely melted under my shoe. I just continued to walk down until the end of the village.

On the way, I found autumnal colors, that are embroided on snowy field. Red maple leaves seemed like fresh starfishs on a white-sand beach. I was accompanied by a little dog, which was so curious about the snow. The dog, in a sweat, rolled over and over on the snow, and got a lot of snowflakes on her hairs.

After a while, I felt my toes numb with cold. I have been caught in melting snow for over an hour. It was getting dusky, but the color of snow kept little shimmer above the horizon. I loved that lucid light, which was sat on by the snow. I felt even myself clear somehow or other. That was a snowy day with a heartfelt pleasure.
