reactive, following what the body ordered, I wanted to develop a lens that has
buttons on the lens that can give directions, and the outcome was the i-Function
lens.

their usage behavior, and it led me to the i-Function lens. I thought very hard
about how to make photo shooting easier and enjoyable. Lens until now had
increasingly better quality but that was about it. If existing lens were
reactive, following what the body ordered, I wanted to develop a lens that has
buttons on the lens that can give directions, and the outcome was the i-Function
lens.

able to better satisfy the consumers because it had better technology and
performance; however, I think that the transition from DSLR to mirrorless is a
natural path towards digitalization.

How the NX Lenses are launched into the World. PART I : The NX Lens Developers
The Samsung NX series camera won high praise from users when it was unveiled last year. One of the most important things for interchangeable lens cameras is the lens. Offering i-Function on top of the optical function, how did the Samsung NX lens come to life? I met with lens developers from different fields to learn about how the NX lens was created and other behind-the-scene episodes.
1. Please introduce yourself.
Sungwook Choi (Principal Engineer, Opto-Mechanics Lab, Lens R&D Group) : I joined Samsung a little over 20 years ago and I’ve been working on interchangeable lens design for three years now.
Woojong Cho (Principal Engineer Ph.D, Control Lab, Lens R&D Group) : I majored in laser optics and I am currently in charge of developing and applying new technology to control and run interchangeable lens.
Youngwoo Park (Principal Engineer, Optics Lab, Lens R&D Group) : Hello, I am in charge of the NX lens optical design. I personally like to take pictures and I have strong interest in lens, which naturally led me this field.
Hyuckki Lee (Principal Engineer,Superprecision Optics Lab,Lens R&D Group) : Making lens has long been my dream. I was so deeply moved after reading about this one kid who was featured in a kid’s magazine making cameras and telescope with lens, I purchased lens glass on my own to cut it myself and process it as I wished. Later, I developed my own lens and polished it myself. In a constant pursuit of my dream of becoming a lens developer, I created my own polishing machine. At university, I spent 28 days in a tent in order to capture the sight of Halley’s Comet, and ultimately I became the first person in Korea to do so.

2. It is true that Samsung is a follower in the lens area behind other players? Can you briefly explain the background of your path to where you are now?Geonmo Kang : Many think that the NX lens came out of nowhere, but it is actually the culmination of over 20 years of research into film cameras and SLR cameras. The first motto that underpinned the lens development team for the NX lens was ‘best-in-class optical function,’ and the second motto was to sell lens to the consumers at a reasonable price.
Youngwoo Park : When the NX was first released, the compact system camera market was underdeveloped, so we were the first to try many technologies. It was quite challenging to stabilize the function.

3. What challenges did you face while developing the lens?Geonmo Kang : I had made many prototypes, but because I didn’t have enough experience in mass production, I went through a lot of trial and error.
Sungwook Choi : The NX uses a bigger APS-C sensor than other companies. At the initial stage, developing a competitive product at the right size and performance, while also using a big sensor was difficult. Although I had a lot of experience in compact camera, it was my first time developing an interchangeable lens, so dealing with it was difficult at first with many trial and error.
Woojong Cho : Different from existing DSLR lens, the NX system uses contrast AF, which means that control is difficult and leads to many issues. In order to overcome the innate limitations of limited lens performance due to small camera size, we adopted the latest technology used in DSLR. However, it was challenging because the technology was not stable at the time.
Youngwoo Park : We designed various types of lenses that will fit well with the compact and light-weighted NX. In the process, researchers invested a lot effort and time.
Hyuckki Lee : Lenses are like living organisms that do not always turn out as you planned. The key lesson I learned while studying polishing abroad was how to communicate with the lens. It may strike you as odd that I talk to an inanimate object, but interestingly, when you communicate with the lens, you find solutions. Talking with the lens while polishing has now become a habit.

4. Where did you focus to differentiate your lens from competitors?Youngwoo Park : We wanted to minimize the weight of the lens that moves for focusing for rapid AF. We also developed a proprietary control technology to ensure a certain level of OIS correction.
5. Do you enjoy taking pictures?
Geonmo Kang : I like to take close-ups and enjoy capturing ordinary objects in our everyday life. I also run a photo blog.
Youngwoo Park : I take a lot of pictures using the NX10 and 30mm lens.
Hyuckki Lee : I enjoyed taking pictures ever since I was young, so it has become a hobby for me. Being able to take pictures with the lens I made is a special privilege.
6. As a developer, what do you think are the advantages of the NX lens?
Geonmo Kang : Best-in-class optical function. We put special effort in ensuring balance of the center of the lens with the surrounding.
7. Can you briefly talk about the lenses to be rolled out in the future?
Woojong Cho : A premium lens that sets Samsung’s unique status will be launched. One is the 18~200mm super zoom lens which will be released in the second of half. It is the first to apply AF mechanism called VCM(voice coil motor), with no noise and quick AF. The second is a macro lens named F2.8. It is the first among compact system cameras to have SSA(supersonic actuator). The F1.4 85mm lens, another lens with VCM, has the widest diameter among compact system camera.
8. Do you have any words for younger students wishing to become a lens developer?
Hyuckki Lee : Even with digitalization, lens will remain analog. For those students who like the feel of analog lens, continue to develop yourself with the dream of becoming the best expert in the analog field.
So, that was a sneak peek into how the NX lens was created! Obviously, the NX lens is not an outcome of overnight effort, but a product of long research and development. I was particularly impressed with the pride each developer had on the lens development work and their passion and commitment. In the next posting, I will meet with the lens planner, marketer and designers to talk about their work on the NX lens.

Inside is a large APS-C image sensor that captures 14.6-megapixels of resolution. This means that you get the same sized sensor as in many standard DSLRs, but in a smaller overall package. Samsung designed a clever iFunction control system that lets you adjust some of the most common camera settings from controls on the lens itself. Yet, neither the 20-50mm kit zoom, nor the body, includes image stabilisation. Gadget review: Samsung NX100
Riding on the success of NX10, Samsung’s first mirrorless camera, NX100 also comes with a mirrorless APS-C size sensor and a three-inch AMOLED screen, plus new features such as i-Function Lens.
Mirrorless cameras were one of the digital camera trends in 2010, and they are expected to grow this year as more companies jump on the bandwagon.
What makes them special is that even though you can still play with interchangeable lenses, the same as you do with a DLSR, mirrorless cameras are much smaller and lighter.
There’s no need to explain the technicalities behind the reduction in size and weight, but do take note that mirrorless cameras don’t come with a viewfinder — this means the main source for viewing your photograph subjects is through the rear LCD or AMOLED screen.

In the weeks preceding January's reveal of the Sliding PC 7, more than 300 news items were posted about the 10.1-inch tablet computer, which touts a unique--and polarizing--slide-out keyboard. Today, "there's a very distinct split between people who are pro-Samsung and anti-Samsung," says Chris Davies, an editor at the tech blog SlashGear, "which feels very Apple."

A quarter of Samsung's revenue comes from semiconductors, bought by the likes of Dell, HP, and Microsoft, so it "has some shielding from the market," says Forrester analyst Charles Golvin. This also gives Samsung the freedom (and the cash) to toy with different technologies--Windows Phone 7, smartphones for Symbian, and Android OS, for instance--so when one of those takes off, it's ready with a top-of-the-line product.

The NX100 is part of a new breed of camera – so new in fact that no one seems to agree on what to call them. They’re defined by pocket-sized dimensions, large SLR-style sensors and interchangeable lenses.
The NX100 joins these ranks, already populated by the superb Sony NEX-5, plus various models from Panasonic and Olympus. It also has much in common with the Samsung NX10, sharing lenses with it, but this new model’s compact- rather than SLR-shaped design makes more sense for this type of camera.

THERE is little doubt of the impact that affordable, high-quality digital SLRs have had in recent years, so you would be forgiven in thinking that its reign at the top of the photographic tree is unlikely to be threatened any time soon. However, in the last year or two, a new breed of camera has begun to emerge on the scene, looking to steal large chunks of the market currently dominated by DSLRs. Hybrids, as they're commonly known, share plenty of similarities with DSLRs, most notably boasting a lens mount that allows lenses to be swapped in exactly the same way as a DSLR. The biggest difference is the lack of a reflex mirror, which offers the benefits of a more compact and lighter camera body, but means there is no optical viewfinder. Panasonic and Olympus have been leading the hybrid charge with their Micro Four-Thirds cameras and are now joined by Samsung with its NX10. In this month's main camera test, we chiefly look at the Samsung NX10 but use it alongside the similarly-priced Nikon D3000, a DSLR we tested in our November 2009 issue. Samsung to expand its high-end camera range, engaging more photo specialists

SYDNEY, NSW: Samsung will realign its digital imaging focus in 2011, with the brand moving from domination of the low end of the category up to competing in the premium end, alongside key rivals Sony and Canon.
Lambro Skropidis, head of marketing at the Korean giant’s Australian office, explained how a delayed entry into the digital imaging categories resulted in Samsung becoming a volume player at the low end – a segment he said Samsung now is dominating. With Samsung’s objective to becoming the value leader in this category, a position currently held by Canon, Skropidis has outlined a strategy that encompasses new products, more innovation and a broadening of Samsung’s channel strategy.
We’ve continued to be in innovative categories like the hybrid area and the mirrorless area and we’re going to continue to play in that segment,” Skropidis said. “We’re going to continue to provide higher and higher ASP (average sales price) products. We’re doing very well in that market from a unit perspective: from what I can see, we completely dominate the low end of the pricing segments.
“The challenge for us is to become the overall value leader in the category — we’re having a really good run from a volume perspective, the last two periods in GfK we were the unit leader in the category, but from our perspective, trading below $250 is not really what it’s all about for us, so we’re going to continue to bring better and better innovations in higher price points.”
Skropidis said there would be more high end products in Samsung’s NX range released soon, with Current.com.au understanding that the week of 11 April 2011 has been pencilled in for a high-concept launch. In addition to hybrid and mirrorless models, there will be an expansion of Samsung 2View range and more interchangeable lens options for consumers.

Samsung at ‘Sonimag Photo & Multimedia 2011′
Samsung participated in the 11th edition of Son Image Foto 2011 also known as ‘Sonimag Photo & Multimedia 2011’ event, which was held in Barcelona from March 22-27, 2011.
Sonimag Photo & Multimedia is Spain’s leading image and photography fair. An event full of light and color that bets for the new technologies as transmitter of emotions and feelings. It was a fair renewing itself to keep pace with the industry, which includes the leading companies and builds relationships between exhibitors, professionals, and enthusiasts. It was also a fair to see the best of the image world, photography, video, and multimedia.
Samsung’s booth was divided into three areas :
- Experiential : NX studio, Connectivity, 2View, 2D –> 3D conversion
- New Line-Up Display : NX and High zoom, 2View and Style
- Sales area : 2 meeting rooms, catering area
- New Line-Up Display : NX and High zoom, 2View and Style
- Sales area : 2 meeting rooms, catering area
In Connectivity, you could experience smart connectivity with the SH100.
With the 2View, you can apply self-portraits with NYC or Paris as backgrounds.
In the 2D –> 3D conversion area, you could experience Live 2D and 3D Conversion with the Q10 camcorder.
In the New Line-Up Display area, you could see the latest line-up of the NX & High zoom, 2View, and Style products. In the sales area, there were two meeting rooms and a catering area prepared for visiting customers. Spanish Princess Cristina de Borbon and Daniel Molero had visited Samsung’s booth.
Samsung’s cameras have received many reviews and coverage from TV, radio, and media outlets after this event. They introduced a Samsung camcorder that enables its users to enjoy the best 3D experience. They also introduced the ST700 as a camera to take the best self-portrait pictures and the SH100’s smart connectivity with Wi-Fi.
