Samsung Announces First SSD Camcorder

las vegas—on wednesday, samsung unveiled five high-definition camcorders; three of them are the world's first to use internal solid-state drives (ssds), according to the company.
all of the new "h-series" camcorders will capture 1080i video and will only vary in their ssd capacities, which will include 16-, 32-, and 64-gbytes worth of data at the highest-quality video settings. an ergonomic hd 1080i video camcorder was also announced.
digital camcorders that offer storage capacities as high as 32 and 64 gb's typically rely on internal hard disk drives. samsung's ssds, however, will add a few key improvements: a lack of moving parts, so they can consume about an eighth of the power of a rotating drive, plus additional resistance to mechanical failure. ssds are also faster, they boot up quicker and write/read data faster so the overall camcorder operation can be faster. ssds can also be made smaller than a physical drive, so they can offer large amounts of storage in smaller-sized camcorders.
the h-series camcorders will all have 2.7-inch touchscreen lcds, built-in hdmi out, optical image stabilization, 10x optical zoom and can also record video/images to a sd/sdhc memory card. the hmx-106 will have 64 gbs of internal ssd storage; the hmx-105 will have 32, and the hmx-104 will have 16. a fourth camcorder with identical specifications will be included in the h-series, the hmx -h100, but it will not have an ssd, recording to an sd/sdhc memory card only. all of the camcorders will be available in march, except for the h106, which will be slated for april. pricing on all the camcorders has not yet been announced.
samsung's fifth hd 1080i camcorder, the hmx-r10, will be focused on ergonomics. the camcorder will be able to be held in what samsung describes as a "more relaxed grip…reducing the stress on the wrist."
this ergonomic build is due to the fact that the lens is mounted onto the camera at a 25 degree angle the r10 will feature a 2.7-inch lcd touchscreen, a 5x optical zoom and will write video and pictures to an sd/shc memory card only. the r10 will be available this summer; pricing has not yet been announced.
samsung also announced a standard-definition video camera, the smx-f34. this camcorder will write widescreen sd video (720 x 480) to 16 gb of internal flash memory or an external sd/sdhc memory card. its specs include a 2.7-inch lcd screen, 34x optical zoom, plus a "web & mobile" mode that produces smaller-sized video files for faster uploading to video-sharing sites. the f34 will be available this spring in four colors, black, red, silver and blue; pricing was not announced.
