In Oct. 2008, through the Photokina (Germany) which is one of the most famous exhibitions about digital cameras the HZ1 (WB500) was shown, and in the CES2009, it showed again with better entertainment. The specification of ‘HZ1’ was 2.7 inch LCD, 230K pixel, 10.2M pixel CCD, and the body size was 105 x 61.4 x 36.5mm. Adopting the zoom lens, 24-240mm optical 10x zoom (on 35mm) is supported, and from the 24mm wide angle to 240mm tele shot all can be used. 720p HD video recording function, face recognition AF, smile shot, blink detection functions are included. In that time, other body performance wasn’t unveiled.At the Photokina every 2 years, as the name of the HZ1, it was shown to the world, and the WB500 has not been released in Korea yet. Now some bloggers are reviewing it, and products at the CES 2009 were delivered to reviewers, I think. And the releasing day is very soon by looking at the contents of the WB500 by bloggers. It seems the first quarter of 2009, I think.
I’m going to introduce the ‘VLUU WB500’ by Samsung techwin which is released in the CES 2009. First of all, I’m not reviewing this with other previewers.
The WB500 which is going to be shown in the CES 2009 dedicates the marketing using the copy ‘Capture your World like never before WB500’. So far, Samsung techwin wasn’t that good, because of Canon and Nikkon. However, from the CES 2009, they will focus on the digital camera business, and show the difference.

Looking at the box of the WB500, there’s ‘WORLD TEST SAMPLE #10 WB500’. Inside the box, there are body, hand strap, battery, AV cable, manual, AC adaptor, and charge cable (SAC-47, 20 pin), USB cable (SUC-C3, 20 Pin). The install CD will be provided later.

Looking at the appearance of the VLUU WB500, it has a different appearance from other family look. The black streamline grip is hard to satisfy DSLR users, but not to compact digital camera users. The body is made of metal and non-glossy, so finger prints are not left much.

Around the lens, it’s glossy type, and at the top, there’s Schnneider-KREUZNACH, and VARIOPLAN 10x ZOOM 4.2-42mm[40-400mm (35mm equiv. in Wide movie)] F:3.3-5.8 24mm Ultra Wide Dual IS is on the bottom. When using zoom, vibration and motor noise can be felt. It can be heard in the night, but in the day time, it’s not bothering. Moreover, optical digital zoom is supported up to 5x, and vibration or motor sound can’t be heard.
It catches focus quickly, and takes a little time to catch a focus, when it comes to a video recording. The WB500 supports H.264 format (8m 28s for 1GB), so it’s not as good as a camcorder, but fine to become a low price digital camcorder.
The SHD zoom lens at the Photokina was made by Samsung, and approved by Schneider, but the difference is that it uses the famous Schneider lens from German brand.
The reason of the change is by customers’ needs. Recently, the performance of digital cameras has been advanced, so to become a premium and different model, the lens has been changed, I think.

On the front, flash, AF / Self timer lamp / Remote controller sensor, Schneider lens are located. On the grip, there’s a rubber pad to prevent slipping. At the side of the pad, 10.2 MEGA PIXELS has been displayed to show its feature. When it comes to zoom, it supports optical 10x zoom, and digital 5x zoom, and it means up to 50x zoom is possible.
The Schneider VARIOPLAN 10x lens which supports optical 10x zoom, has 4.2-42mm[40-400mm (35mm equiv. in Wide movie)] view angle, and F3.3-5.8 iris value which is little dark. Moreover, 24mm (On 35mm) wide angle can compose a wider screen. With the Dual IS, it minimizes shake in the darkness to get optimized pictures.

At the top of the WB500, high grade metal has been used. A speaker is located on the top, 10x optical zoom is displayed, WB500 is engraved, and blue LCD power button, zoom in/out (separate lever-W, digital zoom lever-T), shutter button, and mode dial which supports various shot modes are located.
The location of the mode dial from other product such as VLUU NV10, VLUU NV24HD, VLUU NV7 OPS is inconvenient to DSLR users. Most of the time, the location of the shutter and model dial is good just for western people, but too far for eastern people. Those who have small hands feel inconvenient grip to push the shutter button.

At the right side of the WB500, hole for USB/AV/DC(20 pin) port and a camera hand strap are located. To get better grip, edge is high and curved.

At the left side of the WB500, a microphone is located. Considering the human voice has directivity, I was wondering it’s more effective, if the microphone is at the front.

At the back of the WB500, 2.7 inch 230K (QVGA) TFT LCD is located to provide big and clear quality movie. There’s no problem with a 2.7 inch TFT LCD for old people, but to check the LCD to confirm picture taken outside, it’s hard to see due to diffused reflection. I think it’s solved with the diffused reflection film to see. However, with the film, the LCD screen quality becomes worse, so please be cautious.
From the right top, camera status LED, command lever, Fn/Delete button, 5 function button, play mode/print button, and effect button are located.
The location of the buttons are good. With the FN button, resolution, focus, shutter speed, photometry, recording mode (normal, continuous, high speed, AEB, motion capture) are possible, and with the effect button, photo style, resolution, image rotation, color effect, and image correction (ACB, skin correction, red-eye effect, brightness, contrast, chroma) can be set.

Because this product is Engineering sample, separate sticker is put on here, and with separate serial number on the sticker, it’s censored. For your reference, the specification might be different.
SD/SDHC/Micro SD (using Dummy card) can be used for memory card. The SLB-10A battery is a rectangle shape, and as a Li-ion, Pile Li-on battery, it has 3.7V 1050mAh.
The WB500 has Dual IS, HD video, and smile shot function. From the wide angle shot to tele shot, it can be used anywhere in any situation, so it’s great for blogger and travelers. And the high zoom (Max. 50x – Optical 10x, digital 5x), and wide LCD screen is also enough to catch eyes. People say there will be black and silver models, and I think the black one looks more elegant. The WB500 will be released as a VLUU series which can take objects with 24-240mm angle, and I’m wondering the customers’ reaction for this economic recession.
According to Samsung person, “By more experience of digital cameras, customers are starting to have more interests in wide angle and high zoom digital cameras” “This year, compact size high performance compact digital camera will be a new trend in the market”.
