29th Independence Day of Vanuatu
July 30th marks the 29th Independence Day of Vanuatu.
Vanuatu has a sad history.
I heard that the painful 100 years of colonial rule by the United Kingdom and France were beyond description.
I still vividly remember how depressed I got when I heard that the white sand beach had turned red with blood and the dead bodies during WW2.
In commemoration of the 29th Independence Day, a ceremony was held at the Vanuatu Independence Park. Unfortunately, the event got cancelled midway due to the intermittent rain.
There were no particularly exciting events this year, though.
Three shots of blank cartridge in front of the President like the previous year was the only ceremony that grabbed the people’s attention.
The official name of the ceremony is this:
<Trooping the color & Flag raising ceremony by the Vanuatu mobile force on the 29th anniversary of independence>
Quite long, huh?
Let me share with you the video clip of the ceremony.
I felt proud that a mere blogger could participate in the independence ceremony of a nation and record the whole thing. The police was controlling the traffic around the park. I always introduce myself as a photographer and drive my way in. Vanuatu police are very collaborative when it comes to photo shooting.
Anyways… The ceremony had already started when I arrived at the site.
You can see diplomatic mission of various countries.
“Present arms!”, the command given in blaring voice.
The President and officials make a salute.
They march at their best efforts despite the rain.
Vanuatu citizens watching the scene.
Highlight of the day – Blank cartridge shots to celebrate the day. Three shots fired into the air above the stage where the President and the guests from home and abroad are seated. This scene puzzles me. Shots right in front of the President?
Isn’t it better to shoot fire facing the other side? I guess this is cultural difference.
Nevertheless, the shots left the Vanuatu people happy.
The shots are followed by a hymn of celebration before the flag hoisting ceremony.
The national anthem of Vanuatu fills the air and the flag hoisting ceremony begins.
The leaders of Vanuatu pay respect..
The commemorative speech by the Prime Minister. Although Vanuatu adopts a presidential system, the Prime Minister is in charge of running the country.
The speech turned out to be a bit boring because it was too long and a woman solider who was not feeling that well fainted.
I hope she doesn’t get punished.
I spotted some handsome soldiers while taking the pictures. The Vanuatu solider wearing the beret looks like Jean-Claude Van Damme, while the navy wearing the white uniform looks like the guy in the movie ‘Leon’. I don’t know if you remember him J
After the ceremony, the high-ranking officials of Vanuatu, the Defense Adviser South Pacific and other officials line up for a photo.
Many thanks to the Vanuatu soldier and the police for their best efforts despite the rain. And congratulations to Vanuatu for its 29th anniversary!!

Tommy & Tiky : Intelli-Studio
Thank you for coming to see me. Let’s find out how to edit the movie file, the core of ‘Intelli-Studio’, for today then.
Let me open the file from ‘Edit’ mode. There are three methods,
1. Select ‘Edit’ mode after select the file.
2. Do the right clicking and select ‘Edit’.
3. Enter to ‘Edit’ mode first and then open PC window to select the file and click ‘Move’ button or drag the file directly. If you use this method, you can move several files at the same time.
Then the movie file comes up on ‘Source List’ like this.
Choose the original file and either click ‘Place’ button or drag it to the Storyboard/Timeline part. Now preparation for editing movie is done.
When you click the button in big red box it turns to the timeline mode and the thumbnail size of movie will appear on the bar, right side of the ‘Timeline mode’ button. That thumbnail size changes depend on length of the movie – size becomes bigger as the movie is longer. If you want to control the time unit length, use + or – in the small red box. Then time unit will show up smaller or bigger.
Let’s take a look how to cut useless part of the movie, the basic of editing, from here.
You’ll notice the changed part when you click ‘Trim’ button.
Time display line under the movie changes to yellow and becomes active, and the sign to trim the section shows up with triangle figure. Do you see those arrows are pointing at in the picture? When you move those triangles, you can select the section that you want from the movie.
After that, when you click ‘Keep’ button, only yellow part will remain from the time display line.
On the other way, yellow part will be removed if you click ‘Remove’ button.
Hmmm. I see.
However, the removed part is not gone forever so you are able to replace it by extending both ends.
You can control the length of movie from timeline like this however you want, so you should try.
Cut movies to appropriate length like this and then put them into the storyboard to be in order.
Put the movie into the place that you want by dragging it if you want to change the order of movie.
It appears in sequence in timeline too, of course.
Ah, that’s it.
You also can give variety effects include this function just like you watched in movie from here.
But let’s keep it for next time…
We’ll take a look about variety media effects next time.

Tommy & Tiky : Intelli-Studio
Now, shall we start the lecture?
Let’s find out how to convert the movie or picture format, which is one of the most important functions of ‘Intelli-Studio’.
‘Setting’ window will show up when you do the right click on movie file and enter to the ‘Convert Movie’. Let’s take a look from the top what can we choose from each sections.
First, ‘File Type’. As you can see, you can select from H.264, iPod, iPod touch, WMV. Let’s convert to WMV for now.
You can select one from three choices for ‘Quality’, however, you’ll probably know that file volume is bigger for higher quality of movie. So select ‘Normal’ for now.
‘fps’ from ‘Frame’ section represents ‘frame per second’ and it tells you how many frame changes per 1 second. If you don’t have some special reason, stay in ‘Preserve original settings’ is the best for you.
If the resolution of file stays same after you convert the original, select ‘Preserve original ratio’ for the ‘Aspect Ratio’.
When the resolution of original file and converted file are different, you should choose ‘Fit to output size’ from ‘Aspect ratio’ section however, you can distort the screen at this time.
Then, click ‘Advanced’ to select the screen option from ‘Aspect Ratio Settings’.
After you select the saving folder, setting for converting is over. Now you can click ‘Convert’ button. Not bad, isn’t it?
Yeah.
Do the right click on converted file and select ‘Properties’ to see the file’s information. Converted file is going to have the word ‘Converted’ following the original file name.
You can also convert photo into JPEG and BMP, changing resolution and saving quality.
Just like movie file, do the right click and click ‘Convert Photo’. Then window looks like below is coming up.
Let’s tour from the top again.
You’ll have two types of file, JPEG and BMP, but BMP has bigger volume than JPEG.
After select ‘User Input’, you can also type the resolution that you want. Depend on the number that you type in ‘Width’ box, the number in ‘Height’ box changes automatically.
If you revoke the maintenance ratio by clicking the mark that you seen in the red box, you can type each ‘Width’ and ‘Height’ by yourself. However, it can change the photo ratio compare to the original, so be careful with that.
You have three saving qualities, but it’s obvious that higher quality’s having higher volume, isn’t it?
Checking method after converting is same as the movie.
Oh. I thought the function like this is only possible in difficult, complicated program. I never knew that I can do this function so easy!
Told you so.
You also can move original movie that you filmed as well as the edited movie from PC to camcorder through ‘Intelli-Studio’. Once you connect this camcorder to TV again, you can see the movie that you edited in PC through TV.
However, you can’t control all kinds of file. The file format has to be one of H.264, MP4, or WMV9.
Well then, let’s move the file to camcorder, shall we?
Above window is PC, and below one is camcorder.
Click ‘Send’ button or drag the file to the below.
Then the massage looks like below will pop up. It’s better to click always for ‘Auto-check movie files requiring format conversion’. For edited movie, the file is not going to play in camcorder if you don’t do the format conversion.
There, now movie has been moved to camcorder. Do the right click and check the file properties, same as above.
We’ll start full-scale of movie editing from next time.
