Samsung high end compact camera WB2000
Time is limitless. It was, is, and will be going on. It never stops by anything. That’s why people try to leave the trace of the time. Some people have some items, draw a picture, or take a picture to remember a precious moment. There are more various ways, but I think a picture and video is the one that leaves the most vivid record. However, it’s very difficult to find a camcorder or camera satisfying everything. Even if it was found, the price always mattered. However, if you have the WB2000 from Samsung, you don’t have to worry about finding one, because it can take both Full HD movie and 10M Full size picture.

The WB2000 has the 24mm optical 5x zoom lens. It has F2.4, BSI CMOS censor, and DRIME III to support various shooting functions such as high speed shooting, action panorama, and so on. While recording a movie, by pushing the shutter, it can take 10M pixel full size pictures. It also has the AMOLED, interval recording, HDMI output, and Smart Filter for more fun. Let’s take a look at the WB2000 by looking at its specifications.
Analog emotion in Digital world
There are a lot of things in the WB2000 as a premium camera such as slim body, simple but efficient grip, and practical button arrangement. Thick grip and material normally used for DSLRs allow high class grip, and by having an analog dashboard on the top, it has a modern style based on the classical style.

The combination of classical and modern style might be awkward depending on the expression, but the dashboard of the WB2000 is matched well. The dashboard fills the demand of the emotion like an oasis in a desert. The left one is for battery and the right one is for memory capacity.

Future display 3.0” AMOLED
It has the AMOLED which has been used for cell phone screens a lot. Compared with the normal LCD, the AMOLED is an optimized display having 1000x faster response and overwhelming color reproduction and contrast. Because it’s a self illuminating type, it keeps almost the same brightness and contrast from different angles. Since the AMOLED has no backlight display, it allows makers to create slimmer product. In conclusion, it’s perfect for the WB2000 offering Full HD movies and 10M pixels picture shooting.
External speaker, stereo microphone, and analog dashboard are located on the upper side of the lens.
Power, zoom&shutter, and mode dial are located next. The mode dial is swivel to 360 degree. The grip of the mode dial is easy to change the mode, because it’s made of . When changing the mode, there’s some resistance between the modes, and because it’s located around the edge, it needs to be held in both hands.

Through Drive mode dial and Smart Dial, it allows users faster operation. Drive Mode dial is exposed to the back and side of the camera, so it’s controlled by the thumb, and in charge of shooting mode change such as self timer, continuous shots, interval and burst shooting mode. It’s difficult to set accurately when rotating it slowly, because the modes are not quite divided well. However, when rotating it fast, it allows more accurate selection. By the operation speed, the menu changes differently.

Smart Dial is located around the 4-direction key and can control the aperture and shutter speed, and can be used for menu change. It’s swivel to 360 degree and each mode is separate with a certain interval. It allows more intuitive operation than Drive mode dial.
Due to the circle surrounding the lens the lens looks quite bigger. However, the real optical part is not that big. The lens moves quickly after tuned on. The length change from maximum wide to maximum telephoto angle is about 1cm which is not so big. On the left side of the lens, a flash is located, while on the right side, AF assist light is located and this light also takes the role to alarm the AF assist light timer.
On the side of the camera, a strap ring and ports are located. The port consists of HDMI output, USB, and A/V output port and it’s normally covered by a cap.
On the bottom, a mount and battery chamber are located.
USB rechargeable power system
The battery is SLB-11A (Li-Ion). The SLB-11A has 1130mAh capacity and can take 220 shots and 90 minutes of Full HD movie recording. There’s a safety lock for the battery chamber to prevent the battery coming out when the cover is open. The battery can be charged by an adapter or USB port.
It adopts the SD/SDHC memory. The memory slot is located in the battery chamber. It guarantees up to 4GB of SD and 8GB of SDHC, but 32GB SDHC memory can also be recognized and used. It has 22MB of internal memory.

The WB2000 supports Full HD movie (1920x1080p) recording. The recording is operated by a separate recording button, not by a shutter. Movie mode is a separate mode, but without changing mode, by using the recording button, a movie can be recorded.

It supports 5 movie resolutions such as 1920X1080(HQ), 1920X1080, 1280X720, 640X480, and 320X240 in 30fps with H.264 format. The recording time is limited to 20 minutes regardless of the memory capacity. It supports stereo recording which allows more realistic recording than mono recording.

The WB2000 supports ultra wide 24mm angle which is not common even in camcorders. No matter how close the distance between the camera and subject is, it doesn’t look that close, so there’s no problem to record a pet or something like that. In 24mm angle, the corner looks a little curved. It’s the same angel as the image shooting, but if you don’t like it, you can use a zoom a little.

When zooming in or out, it’s muted.
The color and details are quite neat as a compact digital camera, and the noise reduction is also good in a low light condition. When the lens is working, the operating sound is recorded in the movie a little. If you don’t like this, you can set the ‘Mute while zooming’ on.

The WB2000 supports 10M pixels (3648×2736 resolution) shooting while recording a Full HD movie. Up to 6 pictures can be taken, and there’s not much shot to shot delay, so users will not miss the moment they want very often. This Dual shooting is not common in camcorders, and this means users can take 10M pixels high quality pictures better than 1920×1080 pixels which can be taken with capture and Full HD movie at the same time.

Pushing the menu in a movie mode, Users can activate Smart Scene Recognition. When using this function, users can record a movie in the optimized conditions without setting things.

While recording, by pushing the OK button, users can pause and restart the recording. It’s very useful for those who don’t like to edit their movies. For movie recording, it supports most of the functions such as Photo Style, White Balance, and Smart filter, so more unique movie can be recorded.

The BSI CMOS sensor takes more light than a normal sensor, so that allows ultra high speed shooting which was impossible with a normal sensor. The ultra high speed shooting is available for both movies and pictures, and by using the high speed dial, the setting is adjustable. Movie recording in 1000, 480, 240, and 30 fps is available and played in 30fps regardless of the speed, so the movie will be like a slow motion. The ultra high speed movie recording can only be set from the movie mode, and up to 10 sec for 1000fps, 3 minutes for 480fps, and 5 minutes for 240fps are the limit time for recording.

The WB2000 also supports ultra high speed shooting for still image. It allows 10, 5, and 3 shots per 1 sec. Even for 10 shots per 1 sec, 10M pixels (3648×2736 pixels) images can be taken and except the processing time for about 4~9 sec, it’s really cool.
Precapture the way to compensate a missing moment
Precapture is a function to take continuous shots before pushing the shutter. This function can be set by using the high speed wheel, and in a half shutter condition, it automatically takes 8 shots until the full shutter. That means if users push the shutter after the moment, the half shutter could take the moment.

Interval Recording
Interval recording is a function used to take slowly moving objects. It takes a shot in a certain interval and makes it a movie. The recording time can be set to 1 min to 24 hours. The number of shots varies depending on the time interval.

03_Action Panorama & Operation
Panorama function beyond the ultra wide 24mm angle
The best way to take the wide scenery is to make a panorama by putting a lot of pictures together. In order to make a panorama picture, users can put them by using an editing program, or use the camera having the function to put 2-3 shots together. However, it takes quite a time, it’s not widely used. The WB2000 has 2 kinds of panorama functions to solve this.

Panorama Action is a function to take a trace of objects on the background of normal panorama, so it’s useful to express the movement of objects on one picture. 4 shooting directions are supported, and by moving the camera following the objects, the camera makes the panorama. This can’t be used for fast moving objects or under the low light condition. It takes shots in a certain interval, so users can slowly move the camera following the object. In panorama mode, zoom can’t be used and resolution is fixed to VGA.

The other function is the normal panorama function which finishing the panorama by changing the lens direction with having the shutter pushed. The normal panorama supports quite wide angles and can take the part which couldn’t take with the 24mm angle lens. The shooting direction is up/down and left/right, and when stopping pushing the shutter, it finishes the panorama. However, it’s not easy to get the smooth results for fast moving objects or under the low light condition. In panorama mode, zoom can’t be used and resolution is fixed to 1M.

The WB2000 takes objects quite quickly. It tried to set the focus fast even on smooth steel if there was a contrast and in a low light condition, it kept the speed with the assist light. However, due to the large AF area, it was difficult to set the focus on a small object. For this, MF is better. In MF mode, the focus length is adjustable by using the Smart wheel.

It supports center AF, multi AF, selection AF, and tracking AF. Users can change the AF area in the selection AF. The selectable area is not the whole screen, but a center area and it’s divided into 45 areas. The AF area follows the object in the tracking AF. It’s done by setting the focus on the object and pushing the OK. If the size of the object is small, unclear color, under the low light condition, or moves irregularly, it’s easy to lose the focus. In the selection and tracking AF, face recognition, Photo style, and Smart Filter can’t be used.

Upgraded operation
The WB2000 has Smart wheel and high speed dial together, so it’s differentiated from other normal compact cameras. The wheel and dial allows users more comfortable operation, because it doesn’t need much strength. Like I mentioned in the design part, high speed dial operates high speed shooting and timer function, and Smart Wheel is used to set the aperture and shutter speed and menu change.

The Fn button reduces the procedure of changing menu by gathering the frequently used shooting menus. The preview of Fn menu is seen behind the menu, so it can be applied in real time.

Guideline function is also supported. The Guideline function displays the auxiliary lines on the screen for more stable composition. 4 kinds of guidelines are supported.

Smart Album is a play mode to sort pictures by various categories and provide some editing function. Even though the camera is off, it can be used by pushing the play button. Background music can also be played.

It’s the editing function such as size change, rotation, and image compensation. Even Photo Style and Smart Filter can be applied.
P, A, S, M full manual operation
The most important thing to take a picture is exposure. Exposure is determined by the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and unique effects can also be applied. The WB2000 supports Program Auto (A), Aperture priority (A) , Shutter speed priority (S), and Manual mode (M), so users can take pictures which they intended. It supports F2.4-7.2 (13 levels) in wide angle and F5.8-7.5 (3 levels) in telephoto angle, and the shutter speed is 1/2000 sec to 16 sec (M mode).

The more the aperture is open, the shaper Sunstars in night scenery are. The sharpest sunstarts are in F.4.7.
RAW shooting
JPEG and RAW are supported. The JPEG is processed results by the image processor and RAW is the pure light data. Because RAW is stored as pure date without any processing, it allows more compensation range and free editing for bright and dark area, so it can provide more abundant feeling. It’s also easy to adjust noise, white balance, chromatic aberration, and details.

Here are 2 pictures stored in RAW and the best quality JPEG. The JPEG is the original and the best quality, and the RAW was compensated as JPEG. Looking at the results, even though they were compensated once, they looked different. The file size of JPEG is 4.24MB, while the RAW is 24MB.
