High end digital cameras are struggling between DSLR and cell phone cameras, but they still have their own market share, because they are simpler than DSLR and have great performance. Recently, there are 20x zoom digital cameras in the market, but the premium WB500 supports optical 10x zoom, ultra wide Schneider 24mm, and DUAL IS (Optical + Digital).

I m going to review the Samsung VLUU WB500 which was shown at the Photokina in 2007 as the name HZ1, and because this model is an engineering sample, the specification can be changed.
VLUU WB500 composition
Inside the box, body, quick guide instruction, strap, AV cable, Li-Ion battery (SLB-10A), AC adaptor, USB cable, and install CD are included. It s like a normal digital camera composition. When it comes to AC adaptor, it can charge with the USB cable, and also only with the USB cable, it can be charged with a computer. I think it s better if a separate camera case was included for users who love digital cameras.
Streamline shape body line and wide lens

It s a totally different body from other Samsung VLUU series. It resembles a little, but looks different from other family look series. The thing I like the most is the streamline shape body line. The body is a glossy type, but it s not old-fashioned, and when holding it, the feeling is soft, so the grip is ok, and the big lens aperture is cool. The WB500 also supports 1280HD video recording, and the maximum resolution is 1280x720. And it also features voice recording function, every time you need it, you can use it. An internal memory is 30MB, and SDHC is supported up to 8GB.

Schneider VARIOPOLAN 10X Zoom Lens

One of the most remarkable parts of the WB500 is that it has the Schneider VARIOPOLAN wide 10x zoom lens, and this lens has 4.2mm-42mm view angle, and F3.3~5.8 iris value. It also supports digital 5x zoom. The image sensor is 1/2.33 inch CCD, and the pixel is 10.2M pixel. In spite of the high zoom, it has a little protruding lens, so it s easy to carry. The speed of zoom is normal, and between 1 and 5x zoom, there was neither vibration nor motor noise. More then 5x zoom, I could feel a little noise, but I don t think it s a big deal unless using it in the quite place. The speed of focusing is great, and the shot distance is different by its mode. On optical 10x zoom, the shortest shot distance is about 1.4m, and the shortest distance of closeup shot is about 3cm. I used it with a video recording, and the focus is not fixed. I m going to deal with this later.

Vivid 2.7 inch TFT LCD

At the back, there s 2.7 inch 230K fixel TFT LCD at the left, and you can see vivid and clear image quality as a view finder. Because of the weakness of LCD which is light reflection, we have to consider it. At the right upper side, there s a command lever, and it s used to compensate exposure, and on manual mode, iris value can be changed. At the lower part, there are 5 function buttons, print button, and E buttons. The smart touch UI which has used in VLUU series is not used.
High end finishing and convenient dial

At the upper part, high grade metal has been used, and it s strong to scratch, I think. Mode dial is a shape which can be seen from other compact digital cameras, and can be used to select a mode such as nigh view, beauty shot, auto, manual, program mode, and so on. The DUAL IS provides a mode in the darkness by reducing hand shake to take a picture. The zoom lever wraps the shutter button, and the shutter button is used to take a shot and for voice recording. Rotating the zoom W/T lever to right, optical zoom is set to 10x, and if keeping turning it to right, digital 5x zoom is supported, so total 50x zoom shot is possible.

Good weight for high zoom

A digital camera has to be portable, and take a picture whenever users want. If not, it s not different from DSLR. There are light compact digital cameras in the market. The weight of the WB500 is about 240g including a battery, so it s a little bit heavier than other VLUU series. However, considering the performance, and high zoom lens, it s not that heavy. According to the new from foreign countries, there will be black and silver, and I think the black one is neater. After a glimpse of an eye to the WB500, I have been wondering the real image quality. In the next review, I m going to review the image quality and video recording function.
